Oh Du-sik/Yu-gyeong: Like Flowers in Sand character explained

Oh Du-sik returns to her hometown as Oh Yu-gyeong, but it takes a single glance for Baek-du to recognize her. Lee Joo-myung plays Yu-gyeong/Du-sik.

Du-sik is Baek-du’s childhood best friend. Her father, Oh Jun, was a celebrated champion who dominated the ssireum scene in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Like her father, Du-sik was also an excellent wrestler. She was the best wrestler among all the children in her hometown and was always their leader.

She was a fearless fighter with a temper. She beat up anyone who made her angry. It was known that every boy in their town has been beaten up by her at least once.

When Du-sik was young, something happened that made her family leave Geosan. Only a few people, including Baek-du’s father, know what truly happened.

Du-sik left without a word to Baek-du and did not make an attempt to reach out to him after that. He tried contacting her, but to no avail.

While the people of the town still remember Du-sik as a troublemaker, Baek-du remembers her as his best friend, whom he still misses a lot.

Oh Yu-gyeong’s arrival

Years after Du-sik moved away, a woman named Oh Yu-gyeong moves to Geosan and lives in the house that was owned by Du-sik’s family.

The moment Baek-du meets Yu-gyeong, she picks him up and slams him to the ground, which leads to Baek-du recognizing her as Du-sik.

Although Yu-gyeong tells Baek-du that she is not Du-sik, he is not convinced. Apart from him, everyone else finds it hard to believe that Yu-gyeong could be Du-sik.

Regardless of what others say, Baek-du is convinced that the woman he has met is his childhood best friend, and he keeps following her around to prove that.

Baek-du then finds out that Yu-gyeong is married and that she has moved to Geosan because the governor has appointed her to manage the ssireum team.

It is then revealed that Baek-du was right about Yu-gyeong being Du-sik. She is a cop now, and she is using a different name because she is undercover.

Du-sik has returned to Geosan to solve the murder of Choi Chil-seong, and the man posing as her husband is, in fact, a colleague.

Eventually, she admits to Baek-du that she is, indeed, Du-sik. After that, it does not take long for Baek-du to figure out that Du-sik is a cop and that she is not married.

When Du-sik hears about Baek-du’s decision to retire, she is not happy. She knows how much he likes ssireum and tries to change his mind about quitting.

With Du-sik supporting and pushing him, Baek-du may finally see the career breakthrough that he has been hoping for.
