Kokushibo: Demon Slayer character explained

Kokushibo is among the most hyped new characters introduced in the anime Demon Slayer’s third season’s premiere, instantly marking his presence as one of them more menacing forces of antagonism in the story.

Demon Slayer season 3 kicks things off with an introduction of the mightiest demons working under Muzan Kibutsuji. Akaza acts as the audience’s surrogate into this team of terrifying monsters, and it’s quickly made clear to both parties just how diabolical the top of demon hierarchy really is.

At the top two places are Doma and Kokushibo, who stands tall and calm with his secure strength, exuding from his six eyes in a manner most chilling and downright pertrifying.

Upper Rank One

Kokushibo is the at the zenith of the Twelve Kizuki, standing as the right hand man to main monster Muzan. His presence as the most formidable of all the upper moon demons is instantly known as he makes his entry amidst what could have been a heated standoff between Akaza and Doma.

He is shown to have an immense loyalty to Muzan while also commanding a hierarchical structure to the Twelve Kizuki that he abides by with all sincerety.

When Akaza casually beheads Doma, who lets him as he’s not threatened by Number 3, Kokushio arrives and as swiftly as he appears beside Akaza, his attack carries the same swift candor.

Slicing off Akaza’s hand before he can even register what happened, Kokushibo warns him to not cross boundaries and disrespect the hierarchy. During his warning and lessons in discipline and decorum, Akaza feels a surreal amount of pressure and aura from Upper Rank One, that almost spellbinds him as he stands still, frozen in fear.

Past & present

Kokushibo is no ordinary character, villain, or part of the Demon Slayer lore. He carries with him a backstory that’s connected very intimately with one of the most significant characters in the anime.

In the past, when Kokushibo used to be a human, he was the twin brother of who eventually came to be the strongest demon slayer of all time and also the one who invented the breathing techniques — Yoriichi.

As a human, he used to be a demon slayer himself, but gradually, Kokushibo would come to be consumed with jealousy. He grew envious of his brother Yoriichi’s strength and unrivalled talent.

He went on to become a demon and throughout centuries as a monster, he amassed experience as he slashed away more and more victims, surpassing almost all but Muzan in terms of strength, while still harboring the same envy and love-hate sentiments for his brother as well.
