Hanuš is an extraterrestrial spider that stows away on Jakub’s ship because he finds the cosmonaut interesting. Paul Dano voices the character.
Jakub is on a solo mission and after many months out in space, he feels like he is losing his mind. Part of the reason is a malfunctioning toilet, whose loud rattling keeps him awake.
The first time Jakub sees Hanuš, the creature digs through his food storage and then heads over to the toilet because the rattling is soothing for him.
Jakub refuses to believe that he’s real but cannot verify with mission control since the cameras are down.
He tries to decontaminate the ship, but that doesn’t affect Hanuš either. The creature insists that they won’t harm Jakub, and wants to help him.
They do not like being touched in their culture and aren’t held down by their emotions, which is part of what attracted Hanuš to humans.
Going on a journey together
Once Hanuš introduces himself, Jakub finds that he revisits his memories with Lenka more often. The spider says that they are not forcing these on Jakub, but can feel them with him.
With each memory, he has questions for Jakub. He wonders why Jakub made the decisions that he did, despite them being detrimental.
Jakub introduces Hanuš to a tub of chocolate and operatic music from Earth, and Hanuš also learns about Jakub’s father.
Hanuš says that their planet was overridden by Gorompeds that killed all of his people, but he managed to escape and decided to travel the universe.
He even has knowledge about the Chopra cloud that Jakub is headed to, because he was there at the beginning of time which exists within.
With Hanuš’s help, Jakub realizes what mistakes he’s been making with Lenka, but only after the spider says some tough things and momentarily leaves him alone.
After Jakub apologizes to Lenka and has a different outlook on things, Hanuš returns and reveals that he’s also afflicted by the Gorompeds, maggots that consume him from the inside.
He wants to spend his last moments inside Chopra with Jakub and shows the cosmonaut the center of all things within the cloud.
Jakub puts his life in danger to rescue Hanuš and thanks him for the time they spent together.
