Clifford Carter’s death in Sugar explained

In Sugar, Clifford Carter is a thug whose body Sugar discovers in the trunk of Olivia’s car.

Sugar’s investigation into Olivia Siegel’s disappearance results in him finding out that Olivia has frequented a location where Carmen Vasquez lives.

Carmen Vasquez was recently raped and murdered. Olivia’s car was near Carmen’s house the night she was murdered.

Clifford Carter is crossed out as the prime suspect in Carmen’s case, and Sugar discovers his body inside Olivia’s car’s trunk.

Sugar is obligated to report the body to the cops, but he keeps quiet for Mr. Jonathan Siegel and investigates on his own.

He has Charlie keep an eye on Melanie Matthews, who used to be Olivia’s stepmother. The two were close recently and Melanie is hiding something from Sugar. She refrains from identifying Clifford Carter.

It’s when Sugar rescues Melanie, Carmen’s sister, Teresa, and Teresa’s kids from Byron Stallings, Clifford’s boss, that Melanie opens up about Olivia and Clifford Carter’s death.

Who killed Clifford?

Melanie works at a shelter, aiding women in exiting harmful relationships. She previously assisted Teresa, the sister of Carmen, in breaking free from her abusive spouse.

A month ago, Carmen contacted her for help. It seems like she got involved with the wrong man too. Olivia loved working with Melanie and used to assist her.

Olivia and Carmen got close. One night, when Carmen stopped responding to calls, Olivia visited her and found her dead.

Before she can call the cops, Clifford Carter walks in with a body bag. There was a gun nearby that Olivia used to kill Clifford out of fear for her life.

Olivia called Melanie for help. Olivia didn’t want to report to the cops, even though the cops would have rewarded her because Clifford is a known criminal; she didn’t want a scandal for her family.

Hence, Melanie helps Olivia get rid of the body, which is discovered by Sugar later. At this point, Byron Stallings, Clifford’s boss, is unaware of his main man’s death.

Clifford’s phone has something important that Stallings values, and he is after Teresa and Melanie now, as the last pictures that Clifford sent him were of Carmen, saying that he is going to sleep with her, and Melanie, inquiring if she looks familiar.
