Annette: Castlevania: Nocturne character explained

In Castlevania: Nocturne, Annette is a witch who comes looking for Richter to stop the rise of the Vampire Messiah. Thuso Mbedu voices Annette.

Annette is from Saint-Domingue. She is a powerful witch who is a descendant of Ogun, the god of iron and war, on her father’s side and Orunmila, the god of wisdom and divination, on her mother’s side. This gives her power over metal and rock, allowing her to form her own weapons whenever she wants.

She comes to France with her friend, Edouard, to find Richter in the hope of stopping the Vampire Messiah from attaining her goals. While Annette makes new friends, she also loses a person who is very important to her.

Annette’s past

Annette was born a slave, as her mother was a slave. She worked on the plantation of Comte de Vaublanc, a slave owner who is also a vampire. One day, Vaublanc killed Annette’s mother because he did not want a witch working for him.

After her mother’s death, Annette refused to submit to Vaublanc; she could not be enslaved or caged. For the next ten years, she kept trying to escape, but she was caught every time.

Vaublanc’s men tried to brand her at the age of sixteen, and that is when Annette’s powers came to her. She escaped once again with Vaublanc and his men hot on her heels. Annette was saved by Edouard, who was an opera singer.

He then took Annette to the mountains to join the Maroons, a resistance mobilized by escaped slaves. A powerful sorceress and seer, Cecile, taught her how to use her magic and hear Ogun clearly. Annette took part in the revolution led by slaves.

The slaves burned down the plantations, freed other slaves, and killed the slaveowners. However, Annette could not kill Vaublanc, who managed to escape. Cecile then had a vision of the bloody future that the Messiah would bring.

She sent Annette to find Richter and stop the Messiah from conquering Europe. Edouard had become Annette’s family after her mother’s death, so he decided to join Annette on her journey to Europe.

Old and new friends

In France, when Annette and the others go to the chateau, Annette sees Vaublanc there and loses control, which leads to Vaublanc noticing Annette. While the others escape, Edouard is caught by the vampires and turned into a night creature.

Annette then makes it her mission to save her friend, who has always been there for her. She finds out that he is locked up in a cell, and she promises to come back to save him.

When Richter runs away after seeing Olrox, Annette loses all hope and starts believing that Richter is useless. She decides to find out what is going on on her own, and that is when she encounters Vaublanc.

Annette kills Vaublanc and avenges her mother’s death. She then seeks guidance from her ancestors, who live in the spirit world. She gets to talk to Cecile, who gives her courage and points out that Annette has not been able to understand her ancestors because she has not been listening.

Annette then returns to fight alongside her friends, and while she fails to send the forging machine back to Hell, she is able to escape with Richter, Maria, and Mizrak.
