Top 5 Indian web series of 2019

2019 has proved to be a fruitful year in terms of digital content keeping up its constant ascension. From global giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video to local players such as The Viral Fever and ZEE5, the year witnessed a wealth of quality web series hitting streaming platforms. Here are five shows which, according to us, stood at the peak.

  1. Delhi Crime – Netflix India

While most expected Sacred Games’ new season to be Netflix’s top release of the year, it was Delhi Crime that received true widespread audience and critical acclaim.

The Shefali Shah and Rasika Dugal starrer is a retelling of the 2012 Nirbhaya rape case which shook Delhi.

2. Made in Heaven – Amazon Prime Video India

Zoya Akhtar was immensely successful in transitioning her talent for filmmaking into creating a unique web series which became the talk of the town.

The show follows Tara Khanna (Sobhita Dhulipala) and Karan Mehra (Arjun Mathur) as they attempt to grow their wedding planning agency and, in the process, shedding light on the superficial garb of certain Indian weddings. The cast includes the likes of Jim Sarbh and Kalki Koechlin.

Season 2 of the show was announced by Akhtar herself.

3. Kota Factory – The Viral Fever

This portrayal of science students’ struggle in the Indian ‘rat race’ was adored by the audience. After delivering classics like Pitchers and Permanent Roommates, TVF hit it out of the park again with this one.

Starring the TVF favourite Jitendra Kumar, Mayur More, Ranjan Raj, Alam Khan and Ahsaas Channa, the series is the story of a young boy who traverses the world of coaching centres in Kota in the hopes of cracking IIT entrance exams.

4. The Family Man – Amazon Prime Video India

Manoj Bajpayee’s acting chops were at full display in this ‘not your usual’ tale of an intelligence officer, which proved to be one of Prime Video India’s biggest hits of the year.

It revolves around Srikanth (Bajpayee), a TASC officer, and his struggle to balance his role as a “family man” and his work for the country. It also stars Priyamani, Sharib Hashmi and Gul Panag.

Its second season is in the works with new cast members.

5. Kaafir – ZEE5

A rather unique narrative which, instead of stoking the flames of war between India and Pakistan, actually focused on the quest to prove a Pakistani woman’s innocence.

Dia Mirza’s digital debut was scintillating, as she played Kainaaz Akhtar, a woman mistakenly identified as a militant. Enter Vedant Rathod (Mohit Raina), a lawyer-turned-journalist hell-bent on getting her justice.

2019 was a golden year for web entertainment, and if signs are anything to go by, could we be looking at an even better 2020?
