Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein review: Thriller keeping you on edge

Rating 3.5/5

‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein’ is a Netflix web series which revolves around Vikrant who becomes an object of affection for Purva, the daughter of a powerful politician.

Story

‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein’ follows a naive Vikrant (Tahir Raj Bhasin) according to whom the three most dangerous things are money, power and woman. He recalls how his school classmate Purva (Anchal Singh), who is the daughter of the powerful politician Akhiraj (Saurabh Shukla), is the amalgamation of his fear; having money, power and being a woman.

After graduating from an engineering college, his life is almost set with his lover Shikha (Shweta Tripathi) in Bhilai, away from his family and the city of Onkara. However, his dreams come crashing down when his father forces him to work for the demon of the town Akhiraj and he once again comes across Purva. The day he goes to reject Akhiraj’s job offer, he witnesses the murder of a policeman and thus begins the initiation of his downfall.

Purva quickly takes a liking to Vikrant, so much so that she starts making his life a living hell in order to win him. Akhiraj later even tells him that “you are just a trophy in Purva’s collection and she’ll be winning it”.

Pura wants Vikrant and so her father and brother are willing to go to any lengths to make it happen; from cutting all the essentials like electricity and water at their house to killing off his girlfriend Shikha.

A heartbroken Vikrant is forced to marry Purva in the end. But the end of Shikha also marks the end of the naive Vikrant. He is now out for revenge. Willing to murder his now wife, father-in-law and brother-in-law, Vikrant starts coming up with a plan to get his revenge. But little does he realise that he is slowly becoming the demon that he once feared and hated.

Performances

There is nothing much to say about the exceptional performances put on by each and every actor in this series. Even actors with minor roles do a phenomenal job and shine with the give screen time.

Anant Joshi plays a very funny best friend, Golden and provides comic relief in this dark series.

The veterans Saurabh Shukla playing Akhiraj and Brijendra Kala playing Vikrant’s father who worships him are a little too convincing and exceed expectations.

Positives

The performances in this web series are seamless. The actors do a great job playing their parts and making the story convincing.

The music and the background score adds the right tone to ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein’. Never would have thought that the remake of the song could send chills down one’s spine.

The slowly rising beats makes one hold on to their seats, knowing what’ll probably happen but still waiting for it to happen. Especially the song ‘Bheega Bheega’ lingers long after finishing the series.

The story is fast paced and gripping making the series overall very entertaining.

Negatives

The name of the series is ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein’ which is supposed to mean the eyes that Purva has for Vikrant and how she controls his life but she herself does not hold much power; the source being her father.

Many of the things that happen to Vikrant are not even carried out by her; few of which she is not even aware of until it has actually happened.

There are scenes in the series where the audience is taken for a fool and one can only raise an eyebrow and wonder how far is too far from reality.

Scenes like when Shikha and Vikrant run through the middle of a gang war where bullets are being fired left and right, surely takes the viewer out of the story.

Worth it?

‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein’ is definitely worth a watch for its gripping narrative and performances.
