Netflix’s animation sequel series, Sonic Prime season 2 continues the titular hedgehog’s efforts at restoring his home after a collision with the Paradox Prism lands him between different universes.
Story
Sonic meets Shadow in the void and the two fight. Shadow takes Sonic’s tech for himself and ventures into the portals, but he can’t get through, leaving Sonic to do it but the two agree to work together.
Sonic battles the Chaos Council for the Boscage Maze prism shard, with the latter ultimately getting their hands on it before the hedgehog does. He then has to retrieve the No Place shard before the council does.
He manages to do so but Dread’s one-not desire for the shard and the council’s hell-bent and greedy endeavors prove to be a mightier match. The council returns to New Yoke City with all three shards, which they use to expand their robotic arsenal.
They plan to conquer all of Shatterverse and then make it all their own. However, Sonic, with the help of the rebels and Nine, manages to retrieve the shards and enter the portal to the void. Sonic Prime, Shadow, and Nine enter the Ghost Hill zone.
Nine works on reassembling the Paradox Prism while Sonic and Shadow fight off the council. They emerge victorious but Nine reveals his shocking objective, before leaving for Grim, where he intends to start a new slate.
Performances
The voice cast continues to lend incredible energy and flair to the story with their talents. There are certain moments in season 2 that work really well emotionally and even in the subtler of those moments, the voice cast comes across as quite proficient.
Ian Hanlin shines brightly as the heroic Shadow the Hedgehog who puts aside his differences to aid in restoring the Green Hill zone. Inflections and expressions in Hanlin’s delivery make it very easy for the viewer to relate and empathize with the character.
Positives
Sonic Prime season 2 increases the action even more than the last one and there’s hardly any breathing room left as one action sequence ends and another begins.
The action is creative and engaging, drawing one in with fresh perspectives and great energy. The choreography therein is also subject to a lot of praise.
The entire affair is over before one knows it and allows the story to move forward in an efficient way, with little that seems to be dwelling on one thing or slogging along.
Negatives
The very quality that makes the show such a worthwhile watch also proves to be a bane as the action just seems to be the dominant aspect of the storytelling in a manner that seems overwhelming.
The animation does seem, like the first season, a bit off in terms of the articulation of visuals, wherein characters and sequences just don’t look like they are rendered well.
Verdict
Sonic Prime season 2 keeps the quality, pacing, and action consistent and delivers on all fronts as it did in the first season. With a tighter storyline, better characterization, and a great pace, this sequel goes by in a flash and leaves the viewer wanting more.
