#NoFilter review: Amusing, offbeat tale of brazen silliness

#NoFilter follows Marcely who aims to be a successful and financially independent online influencer, much to her mother’s chagrin.

Story

Marcely drops out of college in order to become an Instagram influencer, much to the disappointment and anger of her mother, who allows her to pursue this new route only if she enrolls back into the college.

Marcely begins her influencer journey with the help of sister Lohana, cousin Rubria, best friends Gustavo and Sandrinha, crush Max, and the local residents of Ararinhas. There are a couple of bumps and hitches along the way but the journey proves to be quite a productive one for Marcely.

She also meets her influencer idol Pi Love, who she has a falling out with, before ultimately ending up reconciling. Meanwhile, her relationship with Max never quite seems to move beyond the crush phase until the very end of #NoFilter.

Marcely finally manages to confess her love to Max, with the help of family and friends. Following that, she also goes viral and gains a super boost in her follower count.

Performances

Ademara leads the cast of the adorkable Ararinhas residents with great confidence and commitment. She plays up the goofs and the charm of Macely really well while also successfully portraying the vulnerable moments of the character.

A formidable opponent that butts head with Marcely frequently is her mother Val, played very competently by Flávia Reis, who’s a riot and a perpetual burst of energy in the way she expresses herself both physically and emotionally.

The rest of the cast of #NoFilter performs with the same fervor that’s required from their respective roles, which is not some deep and meditative commitment but a fun, unabashedly goofy, and quite an animated one.

Positives

#NoFilter doesn’t take itself seriously, which definitely works in its favor as this eccentrically facetious affair is something to be binged while having a laugh with one’s friends.

The casting is really great, and the actors lend the heart and the hilarity to their performances, which works effectively in spite of a rather weak script.

Negatives

It is the very aforementioned jest that detracts from the series an opportunity to be a bit more impactful in the messages it wishes to convey.

While there’s a heart in all that transpires in the series, it’s also plagued by a general lack of remarkable events or performances, that drag it down from being an exception.

Additionally, the physical humor rarely lands, and those expecting a blast of hilarity instead of a warm, funny, and amusing affair would be let down.

Verdict

#NoFilter is a jovial little series of minor conflicts, big hearts, and even bigger aspirations, telling a universal story while being confined to a small Brazilian town. In spite of an unremarkable feel that pervades the story and the performances, there’s enough warmth and fun here to make up for a lot of its failings.
