Maamla Legal Hai review: A humorous take on legal realities

Maamla Legal Hai follows V. D. Tyagi, as well as the lawyers at Patparganj District Court, as he competes for the presidency of the Delhi Bar Association. The series is now streaming on Netflix.

Story

V. D. Tyagi, a wily lawyer, is the president of the Patparganj Bar Association and plans to run for the presidency of the Delhi Bar Association.

Tyagi is not alone; his rival, Mahinder Phorey, intends to do the same. Tyagi’s journey is not going to be easy, but he is prepared to use every tool to achieve his goals.

During this time, the desk of a Havard graduate, Ananya Shroff, becomes the latest addition to the foyer of the Patparganj District Court.

Although Ananya comes from a family of renowned lawyers, she is determined to establish her own practice.

She wants to work as a legal aid, but she struggles to find clients, even with the support of her friends, Sujata and Vishwas.

On the other hand, Sujata gets plenty of clients, but instead of fighting their cases herself, she refers them to other lawyers for a commission.

The lawyers at Patparganj District Court struggle, learn, and grow. Will they achieve their goals, or will their dreams stay just dreams?

Performances

The cast of Maamla Legal Hai played their parts well while maintaining a light and simple approach.

Ravi Kishan as the protagonist is convincing as an artful and ambitious lawyer. His performance does not falter even when he has to transition between comedic and serious scenes.

Naila Grewal successfully portrays Ananya’s passion, idealism, and commitment to do the right thing. As Ananya, she stands out among the other lawyers, as she should.

Nidhi Bisht and Anant Joshi are quite entertaining. They not only play their parts well, but they also seem to be enjoying their roles.

Positives

The cases in the show draw inspiration from real-life incidents and are portrayed with a humorous touch. It can be said that the show offers a witty perspective on real-life situations.

Aside from evoking laughter at the ridiculousness of reality, the show sheds light on the state of the country’s legal system.

Despite an abundance of lawyers in the courts, justice is hard to find. It does not come easy to those who cannot afford it, or rather, a high-profile lawyer.

Furthermore, the show does not shy away from portraying the harsh realities of society, including elements of casteism and sexism.

It also discusses issues like human dignity but does not fail to highlight how these ideals appear out of place in a society like the one depicted in the show.

The audience is also provided with insights into the struggles of lawyers from various backgrounds, including both rich and poor as well as newcomers and seasoned professionals.

As these lawyers become more familiar with the system, they become desensitized to the suffering of the needy and give up on their own ideals.

These observations and messages are tinged with humor, so the show is able to maintain a light-hearted tone throughout.

Additionally, while the characters may not be overly complex, their development throughout the series is both believable and compelling.

Negatives

The obstacles that the characters face and the clever solutions they come up with keep the audience entertained, but the plot as a whole lacks cohesiveness.

While the episodes are enjoyable individually, they do not fit well together when viewed as a whole.

Additionally, there are instances when the show struggles with pacing, which results in some important scenes not receiving the attention that they deserve.

Verdict

Maamla Legal Hai is an entertaining drama that adds humor to real-life situations. Although it highlights some important issues, it never tries to be anything other than a light-hearted drama, and therein lies its charm.
