Kengan Ashura season 2 review: A consistently stimulating season

In season 2 of Kengan Ashura, the Kengan Annihilation Tournament continues with the rest of the round 2 fights as Kazuo Yamashita considers withdrawing their participation. The series is streaming on Netflix.

Story

The second round of the Kengan Annihilation tournament continues with Tokita Ohma going into a coma and stuck in the ICU while Kazuo Yamashita sits by his side considering the possibility of dropping out.

Each fight sees different styles and techniques match up as each fighter has to adapt on the fly and be on their toes at every moment. The standard is extremely high and the margin for error is incredibly narrow.

The history of each fighter is explored as they all have different motivations for winning the competition as an entirely different corporate cold war plays out behind the scenes.

Positives

The narrative unfurls wonderfully and rarely does the series feel slow or uninteresting. Each fight is spread over two episodes with the pace consistent and engrossing.

There is constant information on each character two help the audience and the back stories for each fighter add significant context to their present. The different fight styles and strategies during a fight are also brilliantly explained.

The animation style is perfect, the over-the-top visuals reserved for anime remain mostly grounded in comparison, and the occasional shift in style for flashbacks is also impressive.

Despite being 12 episodes, they are easy to get through and even without the primary character for the most of the season, there is still sufficient story progression.

Negatives

The series can occasionally be guilty of stretching things too much. Episodes are dialogue heavy to stretch the encounter and sometimes there are multiple voices commenting on the same subject which can be confusing.

Verdict

Kengan Ashura season 2 is a great set of episodes that further the story just a bit further with some incredible contests spread over the season. The story telling is concise and the multiple characters are balanced exceptionally well in the grand scheme of things.
