What We Do in the Shadows season 4 episode 5 recap & review: Private School

In episode 5 of What We Do in the Shadows, the vampires decide how to combat young Colin Robinson’s boundless energy and consider sending him to private school. The episode is streaming on Hulu.

Recap:

Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja and Guillermo are all getting fed up with Colin’s antics as he’s been making their life a living hell.

They collectively think about ways to deal with the issue, and Guillermo suggests sending him to school to burn off the excess energy and learn some structure.

Laszlo doesn’t think Colin needs to go to school but changes his tune very quickly after Colin bails right in the middle of one of his club performances.

Guillermo first suggests that he go to public school and when Nadja questions why they don’t send him to private school, Guillermo says they need to save the profits from the club to fix up the house.

The vampires ultimately settle on sending him to private school and look up different options when their neighbour Sean shows up and suggests the school that he went to because he’s connected to the headmaster.

Every time Nandor shows up on the screen, there’s a difference in his face. He’s been making changes to it using his wishes.

Sean shows up with the headmaster and Nandor, Laszlo and Nadja are dressed up in ridiculous outfits because Guillermo asked them to try and appear “human”.

As the interview begins, the headmaster asks them who Colin’s parents are and they panic. Nadja hypnotizes him and Sean so that they can figure out their answers the humans are in a trance.

At first, they decide that Nandor and Nadja are the parents because Laszlo had already said he was the uncle, but soon after they have to switch things up again because Sean knows that Nadja and Laszlo are married.

They constantly send the headmaster back into a trance while they tailor their answers to improve Colin’s chances until the headmaster complains of a headache and ends the interview.

He says that he’ll need Colin’s transcripts from his previous school and Guillermo says he’ll provide them.

Guillermo bribed an old guidance counsellor to make up a fake transcript for Colin and after being followed by the camera crew, it is revealed that he’s been skimming money off the top from the club and treating himself and his family.

Colin ultimately doesn’t get into the school because the headmaster had a stroke after going through an obscene amount of hypnotic trances, so they just enrol in every local sports league available.

All that energy is burnt off with him playing sports which makes Colin too tired by the end of the day to cause any trouble and finally the house is at peace.

Nandor realizes that all the changes he’s making to his face are not worth it even though he was just trying to improve himself for Marwa. He asks the Djinn to bring his face back to normal.

In a short mid-credits scene, Nadja is seen keeping money aside as well and she threatens the camera crew with death if they reveal her secret.

Review

  • This is a truly chaotic episode of What We Do in the Shadows. The various combinations during the interview are hilarious.
  • Having random celebrity cameos is always positive and the appearance of Sal Vulcano is a pleasant surprise.
  • One of the great things about the series is how it progresses the subplots consistently and this episode pushes forward the subplot of Nandor and Marwa in a funny way without the need for even showing Marwa on screen.

Rating: 3.5/5
