The Mosquito Coast season 2 episode 4 recap & review: A Rag, a Bone, a Hank of Hair

In the fourth episode of The Mosquito Coast season 2, Margot attempts to call the outside world in order to escape from Isela’s camp. The episode is now streaming on Apple TV+.

Recap

Despite being warned by Isela, Charlie wanders into the unknown territories of the forests and finds a monkey trapped in a cage. He also notices a camera in front and tries to bring it down.

Soon he hears someone coming by and hides behind a tree. Two men, carrying guns, pick up the trapped monkey and take it away.

Meanwhile, back at the camp, Dina and Margot wonder if Allie knew what they were doing. Allie later comes around to have a word with Margot.

He expresses that whatever her plan was, it wouldn’t have worked. He vows that he is trying to keep everyone safe by building a home for them here. Margot replies by stating that this isn’t home and that this camp feels more like a detention center.

Charlie follows the poachers and eventually finds them escaping with the monkey. He picks up a rock in hopes of stopping them. An argument ensues, with Charlie hitting the poachers with rocks.

The poachers lose their cool and chase Charlie down. He somehow manages to escape.

Back at the camp, Margot explains to Dina how Allie is right. Even if they could get away, they will be apprehended. Dina notes that there is always somewhere they could go, and this is Allie getting things done his way.

She blames her mother because Margot always does whatever Allie wants. The mother-daughter duo quarrel, but Margot does have a plan in her mind. For that, she needs Allie in his workshop and Dina to handle Adolfo.

Isela pays Allie a visit at his workshop and questions him about the trawler incident. He assures her that the trawler would have become a problem later on.

Charlie comes back to the camp running and enters Allie’s workshop. He tells him everything he saw. Margot intervenes, and the father-son duo keeps this information away from her.

Allie suggests that they are going to see the army ants that Charlie has discovered. Margot is happy, as this is what she needs to execute her plan.

Ridley arrives and leaves the boat in Adolfo’s care. He noticed that the trawler he was going to buy is missing. Though Isela believes that he is mad because of that boat, Ridley implies that he is talking about Allie and his family.

He doesn’t like the way Isela is protecting the Fox family, as they could bring trouble. Isela, on her side, likes to think that they need him.

Dina flirts with Adolfo, and soon they leave the boat behind to walk into the jungle. Margot chances upon the situation and uses the phone on the boat to make a call to Washington, D.C.

She gets to a man named JJ Raban and proposes to hand over Allie. In exchange, she wants full immunity for herself and her children. Despite Margot’s valiant efforts, Raban says that it’s out of his hands. A frustrated Margot cuts the call and leaves the boat.

Amidst all of this, Charlie and Allie visit the place where the former found the caged animal and the camera. He is afraid that the authorities will know about them, as the camera must have captured his picture.

Allie calms him down and explains that the chances of authorities finding this footage of Charlie are quite low. Dina, on the other hand, spends the day with Adolfo watching a movie in a cave. The couple gets along and soon locks a kiss.

Bill approaches a man named Mr. Bautista for a hitman job. He smoothly passes the test to get the gig and manages to impress his new boss.

Review

  • The episode feels like a complete waste as there are almost no developments at all.
  • It’s also hard to determine whether the new characters will be major additions or not.
  • The episode does build a good amount of thrill when it comes to tearing the Fox family apart. Margot and Dina are on one side while Allie and Charlie seem to be on the other.
  • The only character that is a bit interesting at this point is Allie. He gets all the praise but at the same, it’s hard to determine why Margot is suddenly becoming the centerpiece or the lead protagonist of the show.
