My Hero Academia season 6 episode 17 recap & review: The Wrong Way to Put Out a Fire

In My Hero Academia season 6 episode 17, the Todoroki family has a tough but needed reunion where bleeding hearts open up and Endeavor’s brutish past is revealed.

Recap

Rei and the rest of the family enter Endeavor’s room in the hospital. He’s surprised to see his wife and children there, who are there, as Rei explains, to share the burden of grief as well as the guilt over what happened with Dabi.

The following flashback delves into Enji and Rei’s marriage, which was a deliberate arrangement from the hero, a “quirk marriage” he called it, wherein he only wished to produce an offspring capable of wielding his flame quirk and Rei’s freeze quirk with enough perfection to exceed number one hero, All Might.

Rei had no choice but to abide by her family and she eventually married Endeavor and they had Dabi. While he sported a passion and zeal akin to his dad’s, Dabi, unfortunately, inherited his mother’s tolerance, which was weak, in spite of inheriting a flame quirk stronger than his dad’s.

This would lead to Enji stopping Dabi from trying to use his flame quirk anymore. Meanwhile, the brunt of this “failure” would also fall upon Rei, who’d have to birth another child, and then another one, finally ending up with the youngest — Shoto.

By the time Shoto was born, Rei had been reduced to a shell of a person, having been deprived of her motherhood little by little as her purpose had been reduced to a birthing machine.

In all that grimness, Rei couldn’t take care of herself, much less her kids. All the kids other than Shoto were sidelined, left to only play among themselves while their youngest sibling has to endure unwanted grueling training.

Meanwhile, Dabi’s obsession with showing his father his progress with the flame quirk kept growing to the point of insanity. This would ultimately result in him burning himself in the mountains, an event that everyone else would presume to be the one that killed Dabi.

In the present, Rei tells Endeavor to not burden the guilt of bad parenting all by himself, as each family member takes turns recognizing their role in pushing Dabi to the point that he ended up in, owing to a slew of reasons.

While the family gears up for the storm ahead and to keep appearances up in the midst of a total public fallout, Hawks and Jeanist enter the room after eavesdropping on their conversations.

My Hero Academia season 6 episode 17 ends with Hawks, Jeanist, and Endeavor to talk about the mysterious “One For All” that seems to be at the center of this entire conflict with All For One.

Review

  • My Hero Academia season 6 episode 17 is a mixed bag. On one hand, the fact that the Todoroki family seems to be exhibiting some semblance of healing now is really great to see.
  • On the other hand, Endeavor’s redemption must be anything but quick, especially when it comes to Rei, who wasn’t just a victim of Enji’s emotional neglect, but also his monstrosity and physical abuse.
  • Irrespective of the volume of his tears, Endeavor must not be absolved of his certain actions in the past, at least not because of his current role in the predicament birthed by Dabi.
  • However, it’s still positive that Endeavor seems to truly melt with all the heat of his regret and guilt, of having done so wrong by his wife and children, and to some extent, all those people who suffered at the hand of Dabi.
