Mob Psycho 100 season 3 episodes 1 & 2 recap & review

Mob Psycho 100 kicks off its third instalment with the same exuberant visuals and comfortable slice-of-life ease as before, fleshing out the titular character’s development even further than its predecessors.

Episode 1 recap: Future Career Paths

Mob Psycho 100 season 3 premiere opens with Mob thinking over what to fill in his future aspirations form.

Everyone else seems to have thought about their future aspirations quite a bit and that distresses the titular character, as he’s not sure what he wants to do moving forward.

Mob asks Reigen but he’s not much help. Meanwhile, Serizawa has started working under Reigen at the Spirits and Such Consultation Office.

There’s a common ground Serizawa and Mob share with each other, and it’s to do with their futures and what they want to make of their lives.

Their fears are only increased upon resolving the new client’s spooky case. He’s a hoarder and unemployed, living amidst trash bags, consumed by his vengeful spirit that has materialized above his house.

Serizawa and Mob exorcise the spirit and resume their worries about future prospects. Mob asks his family, friends, and the Body Improvement Club, only to feel worse about his future’s ambiguity.

His teacher tells him he needn’t worry too much until he’s become an adult when it can be a troublesome thing to be unsure about what you want to do.

Mob makes up his mind and tells Reigen that he doesn’t see his future at the consultation office. Reigen supports him and advises him on the future which Mob finds very useful.

Meanwhile, the giant broccoli tree has given birth to new fans and followers, including a new Psycho Helmet Religion that feels rather suspicious.

Episode 2 recap: Yokai Hunter Amakusa Haruaki Appears! The Threat of a Hundred Demons!!

Mob Psycho 100 season 3 kicks off its second episode with the entry of a new character — Amakusa Haruaki, the Yokai Hunter.

At Salt Middle School, the preparations for the cultural festival are on the go. Mob gets anxious about the ghost costumes he has to make along with others in his group.

While the others are not worried about the project at all, Mob can’t take it lightly when others in the class are working so hard at their projects.

Meanwhile, Serizawa has decided to retake his compulsory education, having signed up for a night school. While he and Reigen discuss this, a weird guy named Haruaki Amakusa barges into the office.

He dons a peculiar outfit, calls himself the Yokai Hunter, and speaks in tongue — all of which gets on Reigen’s nerves.

He eventually calms down though, asking them to hunt for the evil Yokai horde called Hundred Demons. Although initially reluctant, Reigen decides to help Amakusa as soon as he pulls out a million yen in the consultation fee.

They roll up to a spot that Amakusa claims definitely has Yokai energy.

They go inside and meet the horde and the resurrected Yokai King; all the while Mob is talking to himself about the costumes and also getting new ideas about them.

By the end of Mob Psycho 100 season 3 episode 2, the Yokai King has been defeated without any sweat and Mob has also figured out what to do with the costumes.

Reigen is surprised that Mob solved a problem all on his own.

Review

  • Mob Psycho 100 season 3 has picked up after the season 2 finale flawlessly, with the congruence in animation quality and direction doing justice to the anime’s legacy so far.
  • Mob’s personal development and character growth are season two’s greatest strengths so far. The way each episode incorporates the bits showing his growth is heartwarming to watch.
  • What’s even better is Reigen’s support of Mob while acknowledging his growth (despite however bittersweet it might be for him)
  • The second episode of Mob Psycho 100 season 3 doesn’t expand further on the broccoli tree and also misses out on Dimple’s screen time. However, there’s plenty of time for that story to unfold, and tears to fall as the story comes to a close.
