Black Widows: ZEE5 series where women liberate themselves

ZEE5 released the trailer of Black Widows, its upcoming dark comedy which will be available for streaming from December 18, 2020.

It stars Mona Singh, Shamita Shetty, Swastika Mukherjee, Raima Sen, Sharad Kelkar, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Aamir Ali, and Sabyasachi Chakraborty.

The trailer of Black Widows opens on the scene of a beautiful lake where the calm water belies the tension going on in the lives of the characters in the web series. While Veera (portrayed by Singh) has lost the will to live, Kavita (portrayed by Shetty) doesn’t want to die, and Jayati (portrayed by Mukherjee) doesn’t seem to have a choice any longer.

The various forms of abuse that these three friends face at the hands of their husbands makes them resolve that someone has to die. Because otherwise, the cycle of abuse will never end. It has to be either them, or their husbands.

The scene shifts to the men having a drunken boating trip. While they are bang in the middle of that same lake, a blast rips through the boat, killing all three onboard.

It is then that the ‘Black Widows’ feel free to lead their lives, as they want to. With their freedom, life, and choices in their own hands, they are finally rid of their abusive husbands.

But, nothing can be that simple. Especially when three murders have taken place. And the investigative officer (portrayed by Chattopadhya) has the women in his sights.

There are many twists and turns all throughout, with the ultimate one being that, one of the men is alive. Who is he? And in planning the perfect murder, did the suspects unwittingly leave a clue behind?

Directed by Birsa Dasgupta, Black Widows is an adaptation of a 2014 Finnish television series. Mustat lesket revolves around three best friends who are all in abusive marriages and whose husbands work at the same company. The women go through a life-changing event after their husbands die in an explosion during a boating trip.

ZEE5 struck a deal with NENT Studios UK for developing the series in June 2020. This will be the eighth international remake of the original series, having previously been made in Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, the Middle East, Mexico, Czech Republic, and the most noticeable of all, the 2016 Nordic remake titled ‘Black Widows’.

Kelkar, who seems to have a pivotal role in the web series, will also be seen in a ZEE5 original film, Darbaan. Mukherjee, on the other hand, has been creating waves in the Bengali OTT space with her acting in Charitraheen and Tasher Ghawr.

Chattopadhyay was last seen in the ZEE5 film, Tiki Taka, while Singh made her appearance in the third season of Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain, an ALTBalaji and ZEE5 joint production.

It will be interesting to see where Sen and Chakraborty, two actors of high calibre, fit into the narrative. There is very little mention in the trailer of their respective characters. The ZEE5 series combines dark humour and thrill in equal measures.
