Wednesday season 2: Everything we know so far

When Netflix’s Wednesday premiered towards the end of last year, it created quite a stir. It was well-received by viewers and critics alike and even found itself as the subject of trending memes.

The Addams Family spin-off’s popularity reached the point where it raked in over 1.2 billion watch hours in the first 28 days.

It is only second to Stranger Things season 4 in the streamer’s all-time top 10 list for English TV shows and even broke its record for the most watch hours in one single week.

This naturally led to demand from fans for a season 2 renewal, but there was no sign of an announcement.

Rumours also surfaced of the title being moved from Netflix to Prime Video as Amazon acquired MGM last year, which owns The Addams Family property.

However, Netflix confirmed in January that season 2 will be airing on the platform with an announcement clip.

Season 1 of the show followed the titular Wednesday, who is sent to Nevermore Academy after her revenge goes too far and almost kills a fellow student in her previous school.

Wednesday initially loathes the academy, since her parents studied there as well in their younger days. But eventually, she starts feeling like she belongs.

The season ends with her successfully putting an end to Joseph Crackstone, an ancient enemy of her bloodline, and a stalker texting her, who could prove to be the nemesis in season 2.

What Jenna Ortega said

Ortega, who plays Wednesday in the series, received plaudits for her performance all throughout the season.

Talking about her character, she said: “[Wednesday] sticks to her guns, and she’s not out to please anybody. Which, as someone who used to be an immense people pleaser, I really respect.”

The actress is also set to host Saturday Night Live for the first time on March 11.

What the creators said

On the season 2 renewal, Miles Millar and Alfred Gough joked: “We can’t wait to dive headfirst into another season and explore the kooky, spooky world of Nevermore. We just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.”

They added that they felt it was incredible that their show had managed to connect fans from different parts of the world. “We’re thrilled to continue Wednesday’s torturous journey into Season 2.”

Director Tim Burton had said before the release of season 1: “The Addams Family is symbolic of how I feel about families. I think all families are strange.”

He has a particular love for Wednesday as well. “She shares my worldview on things and that was fun to explore.”

Is there a release date for Wednesday season 2?

Although no official release date has been announced by Netflix, the renewal would put a 2024 release on the cards. More details will slowly be unveiled, but until then, here’s the video of Wednesday showing off her dance moves.
