Unconventional cinema space limitless with OTT: Abhay Deol

Abhay Deol stated in an episode of Now Bingeing by Film Companion that the unconventional or ‘exhibition’ space in Indian film industry has become limitless with OTT.

However, he did warn the platforms that running after subscriptions could lead to mimicking the Bollywood formula.

He said:

“They have to see now where do they want to go. Do they continue to want to take chances? If you want to win an Emmy, you can’t think about subscribers in India, you have to think about the world.

“Ironically, getting the Emmy may get subscribers in India, but to get there you need to not think about subscriptions. You have to think about creativity.”

Deol added that actors such as Pankaj Tripathi and Shefali Shah, who were cast as supporting characters for leads in Bollywood, now have the chance to be at the centre.
