Twitterati reacts to ‘Indian Matchmaking’ Emmy nomination

Netflix reality-dating series ‘Indian Matchmaking’ bagged an Emmy nomination for 2021 in the category of ‘Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program’ recently. The feat came as a shock to most who took to Twitter to express their unabashed views.

The unscripted web series ‘Indian Matchmaking’ created by Mumbai-based matchmaker, Sima Taparia, helped single millennials from India and the US ‘arrange’ their potential matches. During the docu-series, Taparia connects wiith their families, gets to know them better, maps their birth charts, and guides them through the process of finding their perfect life-partner.

The show that garnered mixed reactions from the viewers, has often received backlash for its regressive, sexist, and patriarchal views of relationships and weddings.

The couples on the show have admitted that though they have had some fun dates while filming it, none of them ended up together.

The Emmy nomination of ‘Indian Matchmaking’ invited flak from netizens worldwide with some prompt reactions on Twitter expressing surprise and disapproval on the same.

Some questioned the process of nomination hinting at a hidden agenda, while others expressed surprise at ‘Indian Matchmaking’ being judged in the same category as Netflix documentary on Michelle Obama called ‘Becoming’.

Some even came up with humorous reactions reflecting on how the show fuelled the wedding obsession for some families; and some cringed about its showcasing of retrograde traditions and their wrong representation on an international platform.

Besides ‘Indian Matchmaking’, and ‘Becoming’, other shows nominated in same category include, RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked, Below Deck, and Selling Sunset.
