The Half of It: Netflix’s teenage rom-com has an LGBTQ twist

Netflix released the trailer for their upcoming original movie titled The Half of It. Directed and written by Alice Wu, the trailer has already garnered over a million views on YouTube.

The official description reads:

Shy, straight-A student Ellie is hired by sweet but inarticulate jock Paul, who needs help winning over a popular girl. But their new and unlikely friendship gets complicated when Ellie discovers she has feelings for the same girl.

Inspired by the classic Cyrano de Bergerac, the film has a modern twist to it with its LGBTQ+ character. The premise for The Half of It seems straightforward but the trailer promises some deep and earnest content.

Not only does the film feature a queer Asian central character but it is also written and directed by a queer Asian woman.

Director Wu’s 2004 rom-com Saving Face featured Chinese-American, lesbian romantic leads, and explored sexuality in a never-seen-before way.

In an interview she talked about the concept of The Half of It and said:

For one: I used to think there was only one way to love. That A plus B minus C equals Love. Now that I’m older, I see there are more. So many more ways to love than I had ever imagined.

The Netflix Original stars Leah Lewis, Daniel Diemer and Alexxis Lemire in pivotal roles along with Enrique Murciano, Wolfgang Novogratz, Catherine Curtin, Becky Ann Baker, and Collin Chou.

The Half of It will premiere on the streaming platform on 1 May, 2020.
