‘The Family Man’ season 2 faces controversy before release

Amazon Prime Video’s ‘The Family Man‘ season 2 has landed in hot water with the Tamil Nadu government urging the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to ban its streaming on the OTT platform. The series has been criticized by the state government for portraying the “Eelam Tamils in highly objectionable manner”.

In a strongly worded two-page letter to the Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar, the state government has insisted that ‘The Family Man’ season 2, due for release on Amazon Prime Video on June 4, must be banned.

The recent trailer release of season 2 of Raj and DK series has stoked up trouble invoking the wrath of the state government that has accused the makers of “discrediting and distorting the historical struggle of Eelam Tamils in Sri Lanka”.

Drawing attention to its “condemnable, inappropriate and malicious content” depiction, the letter has also deplored the idea of casting Tamil-speaking actress Samantha as a terrorist, calling it as a deliberate and intentional “attack on the pride of Tamils living around the world”.

Expressing his concern about the ‘The Family Man’ web series, the Information Technology Minister, T. Mano Thangaraj stated that it could hurt the sentiments of the Eelam Tamils and the people of Tamil Nadu alike for its derogatory representation of glorious Tamil culture; and that “if allowed to broadcast, it would be prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony in the State”.

The concluding part of the letter expressed the state government’s request for immediate action in the matter and to either stop or ban ‘The Family Man 2’ from release on Amazon Prime, not only in Tamil Nadu, but also across the country.
