“Rani Maai very different from Dhankor”: Supriya Pathak on her role in ‘Cartel’

Veteran actor Supriya Pathak will be seen portraying the role of a gang leader in the ALTBalaji series ‘Cartel’. The action-drama series marks her first collaboration with the streaming platform.

Supriya Pathak as Rani Maai

Supriya Pathak, who recently starred in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s ‘Toofaan’, will now be seen in a new avatar as Rani Maai, the matriarchal head of the Angre family, the ruling and influential gang in Mumbai.

After her husband’s death, she took his position and handles all businesses. Her love for her children defines her principles.

Supriya Pathak previously portrayed the role of a gang leader Dhankor in ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’. However, with her experience, she ensured that no parallel would be drawn between both the characters.

Talking about how the character of Rani Maai contrasts with Dhankor, she said: “I am playing the head of a mafia family for the second time and I wanted to play it differently. Rani Maai is very different from Dhankor, so I had to make sure that it’s not repetitive. The walk, stance, and everything was very different from my previous character.”

She added: “Rani Maai is a compelling character. She seems to be controlling the entire Angre family and has a lot of say in the entire working of the family. She is very protective of her family, and at the same time very concerned about them. Rani Maai is a woman who has been fighting the man’s world. She is one of the exciting characters in the show.”

Since the release of the trailer, the character of Rani Maai has garnered great response from the viewers, including her nauvari saree look and her dialect.

Alongside Pathak, the series features Rithvik Dhanjani, Tanuj Virwani, and Jitendra Joshi, among others.

Cartel will be available for streaming on ALTBalaji and MX Player from 20 August.
