The Malayalam film, Sufiyum Sujatayum, produced by Vijay Babu has decided to take the OTT release route with Amazon Prime Video. The platform recently released an official trailer for the film, announcing the worldwide premiere on July 3.
Sufiyum Sujatayum follows a married couple, Rajeev and Sujatha, who fly to Dubai to be a part of a Sufi priest’s funeral. The priest happens to be Sujata’s ex-lover but they were seperated due to society not accepting their relationship.
Her marriage is then arranged with a man who belongs to the same cast and is approved by her family and people around. The story will highlight the condemnation which lovers belonging to different communities receive.
The film stars Jayasurya and Aditi Rao Hydari in the lead. Speaking about the story, Hydari said:
“The film is an innocent love story, where love is burdened by prejudices and discrimination. The movie is a drama and narrated with a lot of sensitivity and honesty. I had a great time working on the movie. It was challenging to work with some very brilliant colleagues and crew members. I’m really looking forward to the audience’s response. I hope they get immersed in the world of Sufi and Sujata like I did and I hope everyone makes their own special connection to the characters and the story.”
Jayasurya also mentioned:
“Sufiyum Sujatayum depicts the incomplete love-story of a beautiful girl. I play the role of the husband to Aditi’s character. An interesting and nuanced role of a husband that knows of his wife’s love for another man, and tries to find ways to keep his family together. There’s a lot that we’re trying to convey through the film, and one will have to watch the movie and be part of it to know how beautifully these sequences take place.“
Sufiyum Sujatayum is the first Malayalam film to be releasing on an OTT platform. Just like many other projects, this film skipped a theatrical release due to the pandemic. Amazon Prime Video has premiered many original films, initially set for the big screen, including Gulabo Sitabo, Penguin, and Ponmagal Vandhal recently.
The unique love story has been written & directed by Naranipuzha Shanavas.
