Streaming platforms lower video quality in India to ease potential overload

In an effort to reduce the load on the internet amidst the Coronavirus lockdown, all over the top (OTT) media services in India have reduced their video quality as a precautionary move.

The move comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21 day lockdown period during which the populace will stay in their homes. With the workforce now being confined to working from home, the server load has already worsened.

All the major platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Hotstar, ZEE5, MX Player, Facebook, and even YouTube have lowered their bitrate to help the cause. The move has already been implemented in most European countries.

However, the streaming giants have also assured viewers that the move will bring little to no difference in their experience. YouTube, for instance, has set the default video streaming quality to 480p which can still be manually increased.

As the world fights back against the chaos caused by COVID-19, this decision is aimed in the right direction.
