Squid Game on Netflix: Release date, cast and trailer

‘Squid Game’ is a Korean thriller set to begin streaming on Netflix from 17 September. The series is directed by Hwang Dong-Hyuk and stars Lee Jung-jae in one of the leading roles.

‘Squid Game’ follows hundreds of debt-ridden people who accept a strange invitation to play a series of children’s games for a chance to win 45.6 billion won. However, the stakes are raised immensely once the deadly truth behind the games comes to light.

The trailer begins with multiple shots of people being abducted and collectively being dressed inside a large room. They are then informed of the reasons behind their current predicament and the conditions they need to fulfill to win the prize money.

The next scene shows a group of people going out into an open ground with a giant talking doll at the other end explaining the game that is about to be played which is ‘red light, green light’. Once the game starts, the people who move during the ‘red light’ phase are shot down, causing a mass panic among the crowd and more ‘eliminations’ from the game.

The players are also shown playing other games such as tug of war and the titular squid game as well. Meanwhile, some high-profile observers in grand masks are also seen in the trailer.

Many of the players are seen protesting the dire situation they have been put in, and they are also shown brawling with each other in a case of ‘survival of the fittest’.

The cast also includes Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-jun, Oh Young-soo and Jung Ho-yeon, among others. The first season will include 9 episodes in total.
