Sonic the Hedgehog to be released digitally this month

Countries all over the globe are imposing lockdowns to contain the spread of Coronavirus pandemic. In this state of isolation, the demand for digital content has seen a hike.

Taking advantage of this situation, studios are releasing their latest films on digital platforms earlier than usual. Paramount Pictures will follow suit and launch Sonic the Hedgehog across various platforms on 31 March.

The blockbuster film only came out last month and earned over $306 million worldwide. Its theatrical release was so successful that it became the highest-grossing video game adaptation film of all time at the US box office.

Various studios have taken similar steps; Universal made its films like The Invisible Man, The Hunt, and Emma available for early rental, and Disney made its latest Pixar film, Onward, available for digital purchase.

Sonic the Hedgehog is the feature directorial debut of Jeff Fowler and is written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. It is based on the popular SEGA video-game character and follows an alien hedgehog who comes to earth and teams up with a sheriff to complete his mission.

The film stars Jim Carrey, James Marsden and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic. The film is now available for pre-order and will be digitally released in Blu-ray and Ultra HD on 19 May.
