Shonda Rhimes and Netflix extend creative content deal

Netflix and Shonda Rhimes’ ‘Shondaland Media’ is expanding their current deal to offer a ‘Bridgerton-verse.’

The new pact will cover the distribution of not only feature films but also potential gaming, and virtual reality content. It will also offer branding and merchandise deals adding live events and experiences.

While discussing the deal extension, Rhimes said in an official statement:

“When Ted and I decided to break the traditional network TV business model to move Shondaland to Netflix, we were both taking a leap into the unknown. Today, Shondaland at Netflix is creatively thriving, profitable as an asset and engaging audiences around the world with stories that fearlessly challenge viewers and keep them highly entertained all at once.

“Ted, Bela and the entire team at Netflix have been tremendous partners during every step of the process, supporting my creative vision and showing a continued dedication to the innovation that has made Netflix such a powerhouse. The Shondaland team and I are thrilled and excited to be expanding our relationship with our content partners at Netflix.”

Bridgerton‘ was inspired by the romance novels by Julia Quinn and after the ground-breaking success of the series, season two of the show was instantly announced. Now in production for another season, the streaming service has already renewed the show for seasons three and four.

A ‘Bridgerton-verse’ was also announced with an all-new limited series based on young Queen Charlott, which will be written and executive produced by Rhimes. The series will also include the stories of young Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury. More details regarding the title and cast will be announced later.

‘Inventing Anna,’ an upcoming series set to release in 2022, has been created by Shonda Rhimes and executive produced by her and Betty Beers. It will star Julia Garner, Anna Chlumsky, Katie Lowes, Laverne Cox and Alexis Floyd, while David Frankel will direct the first episode.
