Shakuntala Devi: Vidya Balan starrer to premiere on Prime Video

Vidya Balan’s Shakuntala Devi, a biopic on the Indian writer and human calculator, will skip a theatrical release due to Covid-19 lockdown and launch directly on Amazon Prime Video. It will come out on July 31.

Produced by Sony Pictures Networks and Abundantia Entertainment, it is based on the titular Shakuntala Devi, who was nicknamed “human computer” for her ability to solve complex calculations within seconds.

She was even included in 1982 edition of Guinness Book of World Records.

The cast also includes Sanya Malhotra and Barnaby Jago. No release date has been announced yet.

Talking about the film, Balan wrote on Twitter:

“Delighted to announce that you will get to see #ShakuntalaDevi very soon on @PrimeVideo with all your loved ones. Thrilled that we will be able to entertain you in these unprecedented times. #WorldPremiereOnPrime #ShakuntalaDeviOnPrime @sonypicsprodns @Abundantia_Ent.”

She had earlier said in a statement:

“I am extremely excited to play the human computer, Shakuntala Devi, on the big screen. She was truly someone who embraced her individuality, had a strong feminist voice and braved many a naysayer to reach the pinnacle of success. But what truly fascinates me is that you wouldn’t normally associate a fun person with Math…and she completely turns that perception on its head.”

Written and directed by Anu Menon, Shakuntala Devi is another addition to the female-centric films making their digital premiere on Amazon Prime Video. These include Penguin and Law.

The platform also announced the high-profile release of Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Gulabo Sitabo’.
