Apple TV+’s ‘Schmigadoon!’ follows couple on trip to rekindle romance

Apple+ dropped the official trailer of ‘Schmigadoon!’, a new original musical comedy series set to premiere globally on July 16 on the platform. A parody of iconic Broadway musical ‘Brigadoon’, it explores how love tends to fade with time and takes to strangest places for revival.

The musical stars Emmy Award nominee Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live) and Emmy Award winner Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) as the leads.

Schmigadoon! revolves around a couple, Melissa (Strong) and Josh (Key), who set off on a backpacking trip to rekindle their romance and to get the spark back in their relationship.

As they wander through the woods together bickering over the weather, they discover a colourful magical town straight out of a studio musical from the 1940s.

The idea of living with a romping crowd that would burst into song and dance every now and then is fun and nostalgic initially, but not for long.

But they can’t leave, until they find “true love”, which, apparently in their case, has lost its initial vigour.

Schmigadoon! is executive produced by Lorne Michaels and Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black), who also serves as its director.

Many stalwarts of Broadway productions star as rest of the cast, including Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Fred Armisen, Jaime Camil, Jane Krakowski and Ann Harada.

In addition, Martin Short, a veteran comedian, will be seen in a guest appearance in the series.

Produced under the banner of Broadway Video and Universal Television division of Universal Studio Group, ‘Schmigadoon!’ is co-created by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul (‘Despicable Me’), who is the showrunner as well as the writer of all original songs of the musical.

The first season of ‘Schmigadoon!’, mostly shot in Vancouver, Canada, will have six episodes, out of which two episodes will stream at launch followed by one episode weekly every Friday.
