Netflix India has announced that renowned filmmaker, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is set to debut in the OTT space with an exclusive web series titled, ‘Heeramandi’.
The series is touted to showcase tales of courtesans and the muted cultural reality of Heeramandi — a district in Lahore before independence. The stories, spanning over three generations, will curate narratives around love, politics, succession, and deceit.
Bhansali, who has previously helmed magnum opuses like ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Padmaavat’, said in a statement:
“Heeramandi is an important milestone in my journey as a filmmaker. This is an epic, first of its kind series based on the courtesans of Lahore. It is an ambitious, grand and all-encompassing series; therefore I am nervous yet excited about making it. I am looking forward to my partnership with Netflix and bringing Heeramandi to audiences all over the world”
The filmmaker, who recently completed 25 years in the industry, also mentioned that he has been sitting with this “vast” and “ambitious” project for 14 years.
