Ryan Coogler working on Wakanda web series for Disney Plus

Walt Disney Co. recently announced that it has signed a five-year, exclusive television deal with director Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media company. As part of this new venture, Coogler will develop a new web series for Disney Plus based in Black Panther’s kingdom of Wakanda.

Marvel Studios had initially not shed much light on the fate of the Black Panther universe when Chadwick Boseman’s passed due to colon cancer, last year. However, the previously announced sequel was eventually greenlit, with Marvel confirming that the Boseman’s Black Panther character will not be recast.

Ryan Coogler wrote and directed the first Black Panther film that went on gross over a billion dollars at the global box office and transformed into a cultural phenomenon. This new web series will likely explore the plethora of cultures and characters that the fictional nation of Wakanda boasts of.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement:

“Ryan Coogler brought a ground breaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. The company looks forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team.”
