Netflix’s latest original anime, ‘Record of Ragnarok’ has reportedly been removed from Netflix’s Indian library to avoid backlash due to its portrayal of The Hindu deity, Lord Shiva.
The anime, that was supposed to release globally on June 17, is based on the manga by Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui, which has been illustrated by Ajichika.
It tells the story of a mighty tournament between 13 of the strongest champions from humanity’s 7 million year history, and actual gods from various mythologies. Unfortunately, the depiction of these divine beings, especially Lord Shiva, has received backlash because of it being extremely far fetched from actual beliefs.
The first trailer for the show (which has since been deleted) had scenes featuring the Hindu God but those were later removed in the second trailer. Despite that, the platform has chosen to not make ‘Record of Ragnarok’ available in India to avoid hurting religious sentiments of Hindus in the country.
According to criticism against the show, Lord Shiva is shown as a brutal brawler with little regard for humanity, and his mannerisms may install a false image of the God in the minds of people who aren’t familiar with the religion.
