Prime Video’s Comicstaan to receive a Tamil makeover

Amazon Prime Video is set to launch a Tamil version of its beloved stand up comedy show, Comicstaan. The upcoming web series, titled Comicstaan Semma Comedy Pa will mark Prime Video’s entry into original content in Tamil language. The show will be releasing on September 11, on Prime.

Karthik Kumar, Praveen Kumar and Rajmohan, some of the most prominent names associated with contemporary Tamil Stand-up comedy, will be coming together as the panel of judges and mentors to hunt down the king or queen of comedy in the Tamil Stand-up scene. To further indulge the local fervour, the show will be hosted by the dynamic duo of Vidyullekha Raman & Mervyn Rozario.

The web series will tackle the original format, spanning across a total of eight episodes. Each episode will accommodate a different genre, where six contestants led by the three aforementioned mentors, will engage in a battle of wits and laughs for the winning title of Comicstaan Semma Comedy Pa.

The show is expected to provide a big boost to the contemporary Tamil Stand-up scene, offering a fresh take on comedy. It will be the first time that a ‘competition’ will be introduced to the genre in the Tamil cultural landscape. Incorporating local voices, the show is also expected to borrow from unique nuances of Tamil culture.

Aparna Purohit the Head of India Originals, Amazon Prime Video India said:

“Locally relevant content has always been appreciated by our customers; whether it’s a scripted or unscripted series or movies that we’ve released on Amazon Prime Video. We are therefore delighted to launch our first unscripted Original Series in Tamil language, Comicstaan Semma Comedy Pa. Amazon Prime Video is always looking to create new and ingenious content for its viewers, and Comicstaan is one such series, where comedians battle it out to win the Comicstaan title.”

Expressing hopes for the show’s potential success, Purohit added:

“The first two seasons of Comicstaan received immense love from audiences, in fact, it made stand up comedy aspirational for the youth. It not only launched the winners, but also became a spring board of success for many talented contestants! We are now excited to bring to the audience a recreation of the series, produced exclusively in Tamil –  borrowing from the local cultural nuances to appeal to our Tamil audiences.”

The show will be available for streaming September 11 onwards. Until then you can check out the trailer below:
