‘One Piece’ live-action series to release in 2023, Netflix confirms

The One Piece live-action series by Netflix, which adapts Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga and anime series, will premiere in 2023, the streaming network has confirmed.

The official synopsis reads: “Rookie pirate Monkey D. Luffy embarks on a quest to find the mysterious One Piece treasure with the help of his mighty crew. Of course, his adventure isn’t all smooth-sailing. From islands to oceans, Monkey D. Luffy and his crew must outrun their fair share of dangers and rivals as they search for their treasure.”

It features Iñaki Godoy (Luffy), Emily Rudd (Nami), Mackenyu Arata (Roronoa Zoro), Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp), and Taz Skylar (Sanji). Steve Maeda, Matt Owens and Godoy are the showrunners. Tomorrow Studios and Netflix have co-produced the series.

Additional cast includes McKinley Belcher III, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Vincent Regan, Jeff Ward, Craig Fairbrass, Langley Kirkwood, Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Chioma Umeala and Steven Ward.

The One Piece anime series has been running for over 20 years after first premiering in 1999, while the manga serialisation began in 1997.

Based on the casting, the series will only narrate the first major saga; the East Blue, as additional characters join the crew after this.
