Netflix resumes production for You season 3

Netflix took to Twitter to announce that its psychological thriller, You, is back in production for season three, which will be available for streaming in 2021.

The cast of the web series includes Penn Badgley, Elizabeth Lail, Luca Padovan, Zach Cherry, Shay Mitchell, Victoria Pedretti, Jenna Ortega, and James Scully, among others.

Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Caroline Kepnes, the first season of You follows the life of a New York bookstore manager and serial killer, Joe Goldberg, portrayed by Badgley.

He falls in love with a customer named Guinevere Beck (played by Lail), love which soon turns into an extreme, toxic, and delusional obsession.

Season two was loosely adapted from the 2016 sequel to the novel titled Hidden Bodies. It followed Goldberg, as he moved from New York to Los Angeles to escape his past and start over with a new identity.

The production of season three had started earlier this year but had to be brought to an indefinite halt due to the pandemic. But, it is believed that Netflix is still aiming to have the 10-episode season three of the web series ready to stream by 2021, as previously planned.

The plot details or the full cast of characters is yet to be announced, but it can be presumed that the upcoming season will pick up from where the second season left off, seeing that it ended on a cliffhanger.

Season three will also star Travis Van Winkle (The Last Ship), Shalita Grant (NCIS: New Orleans), and Scott Speedman (Felicity).

With book three in the You series of books by Caroline Kepnes titled You Love Me, yet to be released, the plot of the web series seems all set to surprise its fans.

Former Gossip Girl star Badgley revealed in an interview earlier this year: “They’re not soulmates. He’s afraid of her at the end. Basically, it’s set up for season three in a way where they would be each other’s arch-nemesis.”

Meanwhile, one of the executive producers of the series, Sara Gamble, said: “I am not scared at all of saying that we definitely could follow Joe for several more seasons.”

Developed by Greg Berlanti and Gamble, the first season of You had originally premiered on the cable channel, Lifetime, on September 9, 2018, in the United States. It was later streamed on Netflix internationally on December 26, 2018.

The series has been critically acclaimed and garnered a large viewership on Netflix, significantly more than when it was aired on television, resulting in the series being moved to the streaming giant as a Netflix Original title.
