Netflix unveils slate of original films for 2020

The success that Netflix has received with their original films and series has undoubtedly led the streaming giant to venture further into production and 2020 will be no different.

With intense competition from other services like AppleTV+, Disney+, etc. Netflix has clearly decided to take the challenge head-on and revealed a list of original films that will be released this year. Directors Spike Lee, David Finch and producer Ryan Murphy are some of the big names who are slated to release their films on the streaming giant.

Among the key Netflix titles is MANK, a biopic by director David Fincher which centers around Orson Welles’ CITIZEN KANE. The cast will include Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Charles Dance, and Lily Collins.

The latest Spike Lee movie DA 5 BLOODS revolves around four African American vets who return to Vietnam, searching for the remains of their fallen squad leader and the promise of buried treasure. The star-studded cast includes Black Panther‘s Chadwick Boseman, Paul Walter Hauser, Norm Lewis, Delroy Lindo, and Jonathan Majors.

The Boys In The Band, from producer Ryan Murphy, will be directed by Joe Mantello. It is an adaptation of the play which follows a group of gay friends who reunite to celebrate one of their birthdays and the turmoil that unfolds thereafter.

Furthermore, Ryan Murphy will also be directing a film called The Prom about a lesbian teenager banned from attending the big dance with her girlfriend. The injustice prompts a cast of Broadway eccentrics to descend upon the small Indiana town to fight back. Industry big-wigs such as Meryl Streep, James Corden & Nicole Kidman will be in the cast.

Chris Hemsworth, too, will be starring in a film called Out of the Fire about a fearless black market mercenary with nothing left to lose when his skills are solicited to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord, which will be directed by Sam Hargrave.

One of Netflix’s most successful rom-coms, The Kissing Booth will be back for a sequel this year with Joey King, Jacob Elordi and Joel Courtney continuing in their previous roles but with a different storyline.

A treat for Taylor Swift fans or ‘Swifties’ will be Miss Americana from director Lana Wilson – a raw and emotionally revealing look at Taylor Swift and her journey as a songwriter, performer and one of the most powerful women in the industry.

As a part of the Obamas’ venture into movie production comes Crip Camp– about a revolution which blossomed in the 70s at a ramshackle summer camp for teens with disabilities, transforming their lives & igniting a movement. Directed by Nicole Newnham & Jim LeBrecht, it will be executively produced by Former US President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.

British director Ben Wheatley will also be debuting his latest on the streaming service, an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca which was adapted into a movie by Hitchcock in 1940.

Other huge releases for 2020 include To All the Boys: P.S. I Love You, Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdam’s Eurovision, Dee Rees’ Anne Hathaway starer The Last Thing He Wanted, veteran Oscar winner Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close, Mark Wahlberg starer Spenser Confidential, Alan Yang’s Tiger Tail, Alice Wu’s The Half of It, amongst many more.
