Netflix tests feature to limit sharing of passwords

Netflix has rolled out a feature to some users which could potentially limit the sharing of passwords between friends.

Users have reported seeing the message: “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.”

In the trial version, a code sent via mail or text is required to authenticate the user.

The platform said in an official statement: “This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorised to do so.”

The decision on complete rollout of the feature is yet to be taken.

Mass password sharing is common between users, many of whom are unable to afford their own account and pool in to share a single one.
