Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming drama series, Spinning Out, that has been confirmed to premiere on New Year’s day.

Reign alum Will Kemp, Amanda Zhou of IT Chapter Two, Svetlana Efremova from House of Cards, Kaitlyn Leeb of Degrassi: the Next Generation fame, All American’s Mitchell Edwards and American figure-skater, Johnny Weir also portray regular characters.

Spinning Out is an athletic drama based on figure-skating. The plot revolves around an elite solo figure-skater, Kat Baker (Scodelario), who is relentlessly trying to restore herself to be worthy of her lost title. She is weighed down by the trauma of a head injury that she formerly suffered while on the ice.

Her career is the end-game, while the risk of a guarded secret being exposed poses a grave threat. To get back in the groove and in order to be able to compete again, Kat partners with a rather easy-going fella (Roderick) as a pair-skater. Only, he thinks she’s too uptight and edgy.

Her highly-ambitious and emotionally-abusive mother (Jones), on the other hand, thinks she’s a waste of talent. Despite being a live spectator to her daughters efforts to get back into the olympic sport, she labels her to be lazy.

The intense trailer hinted at a whole lot more at behind-the scenes, than what we perceive to be is figure-skating. A gruesome scar at the back of her head, the use of narcotics, self-harm, excessive drinking, a love triangle, her mother’s mental and verbal abuse form the basis of Kat’s inner-conflict.

The series is executively produced by Samantha Stratton and Lara Olsen (Reign), who also serve as co-showrunners, alongside Joby Harold, Tory Tunnel and Matt Shwartz.

Spinning Out is set to premiere on Netflix, on 1 January 2020.
