The Mess You Leave Behind: Netflix’s suspenseful thriller

Netflix dropped the trailer of The Mess You Leave Behind. The upcoming Spanish web series will be available for streaming from December 11, 2020.

It stars Inma Cuesta (The Bride), Bárbara Lennie (Magical Girl), Tamar Novas, Arón Piper (Elite), and Roberto Enríquez.

Based on a book of the same name (El desorden que dejas in Spanish) by Carlos Montero, the story of the Netflix series revolves around a teacher (Cuesta), who starts a new job at a high school in the town from where her husband (Novas) comes from.

The official trailer of The Mess You Leave Behind starts on the same note, as we see Raquel accepting the position of a literature teacher in the Institute Of Secondary Education (IES), located in the fictional town of Novariz.

While the school is said to be the most beautiful place in the entire region of Galicia, it hides some dark secrets. A place where even her fellow teachers think Raquel would not be able to survive.

Elvira (Lennie) taught in the same position as Raquel. The former had committed suicide and it has been only three weeks since her death. She is shown in flashbacks throughout the trailer, a teacher who had a tenuous relationship with the students at the school.

The circumstances surrounding Elvira’s death are suspicious, and when Raquel starts receiving death threats, she fears for her own life. She gets obsessed with what happened to Elvira, to the point that it affects her personal and professional life.

What is the reason behind Elvira’s death? Does Raquel manage to join the dots and prevent something same from happening to herself?

The Mess You Leave Behind has elements of drama, mystery, and psychological thriller. It has various genres combined together by the same creator who gave us the wildly successful and critically acclaimed Netflix series, Elite, which was renewed for a fourth season earlier this year and a series which Piper is also a part of.

El desorden que dejas, even though it doesn’t have an English translation yet, has received mostly favourable reviews from its readers and also won the Premio Primavera de Novela Prize in 2016.

The eight-episode web series has not only been adapted from his book, but Montero has also made his directorial debut by being at the helm of two of its episodes. In The Mess You Leave Behind, he depicts life in Galicia, which also happens to be the home of the writer.

Moreover, this will be the first Netflix series to have been shot entirely in Galicia, where the story is actually based. It has been co-produced by Vaca Films (Eye for an Eye, Kidnapped).
