Wu Assassins: Netflix sends Iko Uwais on a mission to save Chinatown

Netflix has partnered up with popular Indonesian actor Iko Uwais in a new crime drama action series set in present-day San Francisco.

Titled ‘Wu Assassins’, the story centres around a chef (Iko) working in Chinatown. The seemingly simple chef is told of his legendary heritage and takes it upon himself to use his martial arts skills in becoming a Wu Assassin. This quest takes him to recover ancient powers from the hands of criminals who intend to use it for nefarious purposes.

Actor and stuntman Iko Uwais came into the limelight after his excellent portrayal of a rookie soldier Rama in the admired Indonesian film called Serbuan Maut (The Raid). The action movie went on to win numerous awards with Uawais even starring in a sequel.

While the focus of Wu Assassins is on martial arts, the ten-episode series inhabits sci-fi elements as can be seen in the trailer. The clip shows clashes between various actors who use their supernatural powers in addition to their fists.

Apart from Uwais, the cast of the show includes the likes of Katheryn Winnick who is famous for her role in the Emmy award-winning series Vikings, Tommy Flanagan (‘Sons of Anarchy’, Byron Mann (The Big Short), Li Jun Li (Quantico) and many more.

The reception of the show has been mixed with viewers praising the vivid fight scenes but commenting on a lacking storyline.
