Dev Patel’s directorial debut ‘Monkey Man’ acquired by Netflix

Streaming giant Netflix has managed to acquire the worldwide rights for British actor, Dev Patel’s directorial debut, ‘Monkey Man’.

The shooting for the movie wrapped up some time back and it is set to release next year. The film will star Patel himself, Sobhita Dhulipala who previously starred in Made in Heaven along with Sharlto Copley who was Patel’s co-star in Chappie.

The actor has also written the script along with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. BRON Studios and Thunder Road Pictures, in association with Creative Wealth Media have co-produced the movie. Patel also plays the producer alongside Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Jomon Thomas, Samarth Sahni, Christine Haebler and Anjay Nagpal.

Netflix has bought the worldwide rights for ‘Monkey Man’ for $30 million. However, the rights exclude countries like Spain, Latin America, Iceland, Former Yugoslavia, Poland, Russia and Baltic States, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Pan-Asian PTV and China, where there are pre-existing deals.

The Academy Award nominated actor has featured in blockbuster movies like ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, ‘Lion’ and ‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’.

The plot of the film focuses on a convict who has recently emerged from prison and sees a world caught up in corporate greed and eroding spiritual values. He goes on to seek revenge from those who took everything from him years ago.
