Netflix releases a selection of documentary series and films on YouTube for free

Netflix has released selected documentary series and films on its YouTube channel. The purpose of making them available for free is to help out teachers during this period of lock-down.

Previously Netflix allowed teachers to stream documentaries in their classrooms.
With the unprecedented lockdown in place, the OTT Platform decided to release them on YouTube for free viewing.

The streaming giant revealed that it hopes this move would help professors around the globe.

Netflix has also added subtitles in more than a dozen languages including Hindi, French, German, Korean, Thai and Swedish, among others.

Our Planet

Duration: 8 episodes

This British documentary series, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, explores the impact of climate change and showcases the beauty of nature. The series has an impressive rating of 9.3 on IMDb.

Babies

Duration: 15 episodes, 5 available for free

Babies is a multi-part series which seeks to venture into the world and minds of infants. The documentary employs the work of experts to investigate the development process of newborns.

Duration: 25 mins

The short film is set in rural India and explores the stigma surrounding menstruation. Directed by Rayka Zehtabch it went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2019.

Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes

This Ava DuVernay film was nominated for Oscars and refers to the 13th Amendment to the (American) Constitution. The film combines archival footage with testimonies from activists and scholars to explore the USA’s prison system and racial discrimination.

Abstract: The art of design

Duration: 14 episodes, 8 available for free

This series has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and features the biggest names in the design world to take a deeper look at their work and examine the impact of design in their lives.

Explained

Duration: 30 episodes, 10 available for free

The series is a collaborative effort with Vox Media Studios and Vox. It undertakes a diverse set of relevant topics and explains their impact on society.

Knock down the house

Duration: 1 hour 26 minutes

Directed by Rachel Lears this documentary film explores the 2018 US elections. It follows the campaigns of four female candidates including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The feature has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
