Netflix pledges net zero emissions by end of 2022

Netflix has announced a pledge to reach zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2022, and every following year. The plan is termed ‘Net Zero + Nature’.

It has been divided into three steps: reducing emissions, retaining carbon storage and removing carbon from atmosphere.

Emma Stewart, Netflix Sustainability Officer, said:

“When it comes to entertainment, sustainability is an epic story creators are already telling. In 2020, 160 million households around the world chose to watch at least one film or show on the platform that helped viewers better understand these issues.”

Reacting to the pledge, Christiana Figueres, co-architect of the U.N. Paris Agreement, said:

“We are delighted to see Netflix apply the same positive disruption to sustainability that they’ve applied in their business, upping the ambition for achieving near-term net-zero targets and harnessing its superpower of storytelling to educate and entertain citizens.”
