Netflix’s controversial show Messiah cancelled after just one season

The American drama series Messiah, which premiered in January 2020, will not come back for a second season, Netflix has confirmed.

The highly controversial show revolved around the character of “al-Masih” played by Mehdi Dehbi, who claims he is the second coming of Jesus.

Season one focused on the investigations conducted by the CIA to find out whether the man is a fraud or actually a divine being.

The season one, which ended on a cliffhanger, has a mere 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, the web series has its niche fanbase. With the decision to not renew the show, fans are left disappointed.

Will Traval who plays the role of Will Mathers in Messiah, took to Instagram to confirm the news as well as share his disappointment. He also thanked the fans for their love and support.

The decision to cancel Messiah is likely due to its huge production budget which included an enormous cast as well as international shooting locations.

The outbreak of COVID-19 was just another nail in the coffin. Many OTT Platforms, including Netflix, have halted production for various projects due to the pandemic.

The creator and producer of the Messiah, Michael Petroni, also shared a heartfelt message on Instagram.

Petroni revealed that the writers had in fact finished the script for the second season and were left disappointed and shocked with the news of its cancellation. He also urged the fans to “#SaveMessiah”.
