Netflix leads amongst streamers in Oscars 2021 wins

93rd Academy Awards were held on April 25. Among the many winners, Netflix was seen leading with 7 trophies.

Netflix was nominated for a total of 36 movies and shows, which was the maximum number of nominations for any streaming platform. Out of these, it held the trophy for 7 categories but lost out for best movie and leading actors’ categories.

It won the Oscar for best cinematography and production design for David Fincher’s ‘Mank’. ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ won an Oscar for the makeup and hairstyling categories.

It also won Best documentary feature for ‘My Octopus Teacher’. The Oscar for Best live-action short and Best animated short were also bagged by Netflix for ‘Two Distant Strangers’ and ‘If Anything Happens I Love You’ respectively.

After Netflix, Disney emerged as the next big winner and took 5 trophies home. Disney’s Searchlight Pictures’ ‘Nomadland’ won three awards (best picture, director for Chloé Zhao and actress for McDormand) and Disney-Pixar got two, for ‘Soul’ (best animated feature film and score). This represented Disney+’s first Academy win.

Amazon Studios and Warner Bros took home two and three trophies home, respectively. Streaming giants like Apple TV+ and Hulu were not a part of the winning brigade.
