Netflix India announces fresh slate of Bollywood films for 2022

Netflix India has teased a brand-new slate of Bollywood films for the remainder of the year which includes some previously announced and some brand-new titles.

These releases will feature some heavy-hitters of the industry including Tabu, Yami Gautam, Ali Fazal, Anushka Sharma, Ritesh Deshmukh, Rajkummar Rao, Diljit Dosanjh and Radhika Apte, among others. The films were teased with new pictures, clips and behind-the-scenes moments.

The announced titles are:

Jogi

This Diljit Dosanjh led drama is set in 1984 Delhi amid the infamous anti-Sikh riots. The plot revolves around three friends from different faiths who join forces to save numerous innocent lives during the disastrous time. It also stars Kumud Mishra, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, Hiten Tejwani and Amyra Dastur.

The film is set to release on September 16, 2022. Incidentally, Jogi is the only title in the list that has a conclusive premiere date.

Chakda ‘Xpress

Anushka Sharma spearheads this sports biopic based on the life of Indian cricketer Jhulan Goswami. It depicts how the player fought against all odds and rose above misogyny, politics, discrimination, and more to become the highest wicket taker in women’s cricket history.

The cast also includes Renuka Shahane, Anshul Chauhan, Koushik Sen, and Mahesh Thakur, among others.

Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga

This film stars Sunny Kaushal and Yami Gautam Dhar in the lead. It follows an air hostess and her businessman lover who plan to steal diamonds to rid themselves from a loan shark.

However, the plan goes awry when the very plane carrying the diamonds ends up in a hostage situation.

Kathal

When a local politician’s beloved jackfruits (Kathals) go missing, it turns into a curious case that is handed to a young and earnest police officer, played by Sanya Malhotra.

The film is based on true-ish events and also features Anant Joshi, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav and Neha Saraf.

Khufiya

This film was also announced by Netflix almost a year ago and is based on the novel ‘Escape to Nowhere’ by ex Chief of Counter Espionage Unit of R&AW, Amar Bhushan.

Khufiya is the journey of a R&AW operative, Krishna Mehra, who is tasked with a very crucial mission that leaves her struggling to balance her dual identity of a spy and a lover. The cast includes Ali Fazal, Ashish Vidyarthi, Tabu, and Wamiqa Gabbi.

Monica, O My Darling

This Netflix dark comedy chronicles the life of a man who desperately tries to make something of himself. He teams up with some unlikely friends and a vicious plan to pull off the perfect murder comes up.

It will star Rajkummar Rao, Huma S Qureshi, Radhika Apte, Sikander Kher, Bagavathi Perumal, Akansha Ranjan Kapoor, Sukant Goel and Zayn Marie Khan.

Plan A Plan B

Initially announced almost a year ago by Netflix, this Ritesh Deshmukh and Tamannaah Bhatia led comedy showcases an awkward situation when a divorce lawyer crosses paths with a matchmaker. Although quite opposite in their approach, things go haywire when romance brews between them.

It will also star Poonam Dhillon and Kusha Kapila.

Qala

Set during the 1930s and late 1940s, Qala is the story of the young, titular playback singer. It highlights her tragic past and the ways in which it catches up to her, causing her to collapse at the peak of success.

Furthermore, the inception and conclusion of her spiral is linked to her relationship with her mother. The nature of her upbringing and the neurosis it causes.

Qala is also the acting debut of late actor Irfan Khan’s son Babil Khan. It also stars Swastika Mukherjee and Amit Sial.

The Archies

Inspired by the titular comics, The Archies is a Zoya Akhtar-directed musical drama set in the 60s. It features Mihir Ahuja, Dot, Khushi Kapoor, Suhana Khan, Yuvraj Menda, Agastya Nanda and Vedang Raina as the main characters.

It is touted to be a musical adventure laden with youth, rebellion, friendships, first loves and more by Netflix.

This upcoming film is an adaptation of one of Keigo Higashino’s most famous works, The Devotion of Suspect X — which is a murder mystery. It will mark the OTT debut of Kareena Kapoor Khan and will be directed by Sujoy Ghosh. Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma will also be a part of the cast.
