Streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu have, in their own ways, decided to show solidarity for the Black Lives Matter movement.
Netflix is now featuring a Black Lives Matter collection which includes more than 40 fictional and non-fictional web series and movies that “only begin to tell the complex and layered stories about racial injustice and Blackness in America.”
The streaming giant took to Twitter to make the announcement:
The suggestions will also be prompted if any user looks up “George Floyd” – the Black man who was wrongfully killed by a white cop in USA. This incident sparked worldwide protests and discussions around Black lives.
The same prompts will also appear if the searches are made in the names of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade – victims who lost their lives to police and racial violence.
The latest addition to the curated list includes DA 5 Bloods.
Likewise, streaming platform Hulu also revealed via Twitter that they will be donating $5M “to drive positive change”.
In addition to the above donation, Hulu also shifted premiere dates for Love, Victor and Taste The Nation to June 17 and June 18 respectively. The move was made to turn the spotlight to June 19 – an important date that marks 155 years of slavery abolishment.
Streaming platforms like HBO Max, Disney+ and Netflix also announced removal of certain content that showcases racial injustices from their services.
Amidst the pandemic and racial injustices, Netflix has been trying its best to be there for the community. The streaming service also set up a relief fund for employees that lost work due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
