Netflix unveils first look for new original series ‘Ratched’

Netflix has revealed posters for their brand new web series titled, Ratched. It is a prequel story to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and narrates the origin story of the infamous character of the evil and sadistic nurse, Mildred Ratched.

The series is the brainchild of American Horror Story creator, Ryan Murphy. While speaking to Vanity Fair, Murphy stated:

I feel like Nurse Ratched is sort of a shorthand for barbarism. She became almost like a catchphrase for any sort of institutional abuse of power. What was interested was trying to create an emotional character from a reputation that’s very cold…trying to figure out every little detail about her childhood, her relationships, her sexuality. Because when people think of Ratched, they think of her as shut off and cruel and uncaring.”

According to reports, the story will be set in 1947, when Mildred arrives in Northern California seeking employment at a psychiatric hospital where dark mental experiments are underway on humans.

On a sinister mission, she presents herself as the ideal candidate of what the perfect nurse should be. However, she begins to penetrate the mental health care system and those within it.

Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born.

Ratched will feature Sarah Paulson as Mildred Ratched along with Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, Jon Jon Briones, Finn Wittrock, Charlie Carver, Alice Englert, Amanda Plummer, Corey Stoll, Sophie Okonedo, and Vincent D’Onofrio.

The Netflix original will premiere on September 18.
