The live-action ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ series has confirmed the casting of the four lead roles for their series. The Netflix reimagining of the popular animated series was first confirmed back in September 2018.
Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousely and Dallas Liu have all signed on to play Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko, respectively.
Cormier was seen in shows like ‘Lost in Space’ and is repped by Premiere Talent Management and Innovative Arts. Kiawentiio starred in the Netflix series ‘Anne with an E’. She is repped by Oscars Abrams Zimel & Associates Inc.
Ousley is known for his roles in ’13 Reasons Why’ and ‘Young Sheldon’. He is repped by Amsel, Eisenstadt and Frazier, Impact Artists Group, and Skrzyniarz & Mallean. Liu will be appearing in the upcoming Marvel film ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’. He is repped by CAA, LVL Up Management, Coast to Coast Talent Group, and Goodman Genow.
Albert Kim was brought in as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Along with Kim, Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore executive produce for Rideback, with Michael Goi also executive producing. Roseanne Liang is a co-executive producer. Goi and Liang are also directors on the show, as is Jabbar Raisani.
Talking about the Avatar reboot, Kim said: “Netflix’s format meant we had an opportunity to reimagine a story that had originally been told in self-contained half-hour episodes as an ongoing serialized narrative. That meant story points and emotional arcs we’d loved in the original could be given even more room to breathe and grow.
“Finally, a live-action version would establish a new benchmark in representation and bring in a whole new generation of fans. This was a chance to showcase Asian and Indigenous characters as living, breathing people. Not just in a cartoon, but in a world that truly exists, very similar to the one we live in.”
