Naseeruddin Shah-starrer ‘Mee Raqsam’ pays homage to poet Kaifi Azmi

Mee Raqsam’, presented by Shabana Azmi and the directorial debut of her brother, Baba Azmi, is a homage to the memory of their father, poet Kaifi Azmi. Releasing on August 21, the film will be available to watch on ZEE5.

‘Mee Raqsam’ will explore the bond of a young girl who dreams to be a dancer and her father, who single-handedly supports her and prepares her to brave against all odds. Hailing from a small village, the struggles of the girl to pursue her dreams in spite of various social hurdles under the guidance of her father will be the crux of the film.

It will also throw critical light on the rampages of community gossip, religion, casteism and other social evils that plagued and continue to plague Indian society.

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah will be playing the role of the father in the film. ‘Mee Raqsam’ also stars Aditi Subedi and Danish Husain in pivotal roles. According to reports, the film will portray the relationship Shabana Azmi had with her father through fictional characterisation.

The village sequences of ‘Mee Raqsam’ have been shot in Mijwan, a village in eastern Uttar Pradesh, which is coincidentally also the birthplace of Kaifi Azmi. According to Baba, his father had requested him to make a film that involves shooting in Mijwan.

Although it seemed difficult owing to very little infrastructural facilities in the village, through this homage, he was finally able to breathe life into his father’s request and the legacy of composite culture that he has left behind.

‘Mee Raqsam’ will be an interesting addition to ZEE5’s loaded content crate of promising originals like contemporary drama Pareeksha and Tamil cop thriller Danny.
